A new support group in 2013 has been established for people insane (or brave!) enough to study medicine and parent at the same time. ‘MedParents’ provides an opportunity to meet other mums and dads from different levels of the course, exchange ideas about how best to achieve a good balance of study and childcare, or learn tips and strategies to make things easier for yourself and your children (e.g MedParents has already helped parents in ELM3 to secure a childcare-friendly stream). MedParents is not only an advocacy and information group, it’s also where you simply get to talk to people who understand the challenges you might be facing, so that we can all get through medical school with our sanity intact!
If you have children, are expecting, or planning a family during the course, this is the group for you! Look them up on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/groups/412409268852734/), contact Sara Trafford (email@example.com) or OUMSA for more details. We’ll be having regular meetings throughout the year and organising some activities for the children too. Our appreciation goes to the Otago Medical Faculty for funding the group, and OUMSA for their support also.
